Heavy Equipment Insurance in Virginia

Contractors equipment coverage across the Commonwealth — written by the machine, because the Virginia rule that reaches a dozer is not the one that reaches a forklift. Pick your iron below.

Virginia works its iron from the Hampton Roads ports up the Richmond corridor and out to the Roanoke valley, and it is one of the few states that puts a three-tier license on the contractor and a second set of rules on the ground he is disturbing.

Because the rules that reach a machine differ by machine, we give each one its own Virginia page rather than pretending a single state page could cover all five honestly. Choose the machine you run and the page will take the Virginia specifics from there.

Running something else? We also write trenchers, motor graders, articulated haulers, track loaders, compactors, pile drivers and directional drills — see all equipment we cover.

Who licenses Virginia equipment contractors

Virginia requires a statewide contractor license in three classes (A, B, and C) that set the permitted monetary value of contracts and projects, issued by the DPOR Board for Contractors.

The Board publishes the class structure itself, and the class you hold shapes which machines end up on your schedule — which is the question each of the per-machine pages above picks up.

How coverage is placed

Every machine above sits on the same core lines, and only the first is a condition of writing you: the equipment floater for the machines you own, rented and leased equipment for the ones you do not, general liability for damage the work does to others, commercial auto for the trucks and trailers, and workers compensation for the crews. We place them monoline — no package required.

Primary sources

The statute, permit and safety-authority sources behind each machine sit on that machine’s Virginia page above, where the rule actually applies.

Virginia equipment insurance FAQs

Do you write equipment insurance for contractors throughout Virginia?

Yes — Equipment Guard Insurance places heavy equipment and contractors equipment coverage across the Commonwealth, from Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake through Richmond and Newport News to Roanoke and the Arlington side. We write the machines monoline, so a schedule can be placed on its own without a package policy wrapped around it.

Which machines do you cover in Virginia?

Skid steers, excavators from mini to full size, backhoes, rough-terrain forklifts and telehandlers, and dozers, plus trenchers, motor graders, articulated haulers, track loaders, compactors, pile drivers and directional drills. Each of the five has its own Virginia page, because the Virginia rule that reaches one machine has nothing to say about the next.

Why does Virginia get a page per machine instead of one state page?

Because the regulator changes with the machine. A skid steer raises a title-and-lien question answered at the State Corporation Commission, an excavator answers to the underground utility damage prevention statute, a backhoe travels the road under the Vehicle Code definition, a forklift operator falls under Virginia’s own occupational safety plan, and a dozer clearing ground answers to a state stormwater permit. One page could not carry five regulators honestly.

Where does a lender file to perfect an interest in Virginia equipment?

With the State Corporation Commission — which is the detail that catches people out. Most states run central UCC filing through the Secretary of State; the Commonwealth does not. A skid steer or excavator is untitled construction equipment rather than a registered vehicle, so ownership after a theft rests on the bill of sale, the serial number and that UCC record. The skid steer page takes it from there.

What does the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act change for earthmoving?

It can pull construction-stormwater permitting below the usual one-acre threshold inside designated coastal areas, so a job that would be under the line elsewhere in the state can sit above it here. The dozer page covers the VAR10 general permit and where that lower trigger applies.

Do I have to move my other policies to insure my Virginia equipment with you?

No. We write equipment-only. If you already carry general liability or a business owner’s policy you are content with, we do not need to touch it to schedule your machines — that is the whole point of placing the equipment monoline.
